Dionysus in the making

A wild and drunk Namjoon enters Suga’s studio where he and J-Hope are working on new songs for their new album “Map of the Soul: Persona”

Namjoon: Guys, I had this idea for another song for our album.
Suga: What is it?
J-Hope: Yeah tell us.
Namjoon: In Greek mythology, there is this god of wine called Dionysus. We could use that
J-Hope: Ooh, using Greek  mythology in our songs would make us look so sophisticated hahah.
Namjoon: Right? We could dress up really nice for the concept pictures with the theme being Dionysus, don’t you think?
J-Hope: Yes! Greek mythology is beautiful. The stylists are going to have a blast.
Suga: What would the lyrics of the song be about precisely?
Namjoon: I want the chorus to stick in people’s heads, so how about we repeat “Drink it up” a bunch of times in it?
Suga: If I understand well, you want to name a song after a greek god and make it be about getting wasted?
Namjoon: Precisely that.
J-Hope: I’m so down, oh my god, I have been waiting for this moment!
Suga: But Namjoon, we’re known for having a deeper meaning behind our songs and music videos. Isn't making a song about a god of wine be about getting wasted too obvious and out there?
Namjoon: Of course, that is what I’m going for. I want the song to be fun. I was also thinking of making a rock beat to go along with it.
Suga/J-Hope: Oooooh!
J-Hope: Oh we’re bringing rock back? I’m even more excited! Let’s do it!
Suga: You know what? At this point, let’s just do it.

A few months later, in Bighit Entertainment’s studio.

Suga: Ah, I’m so happy I’m done with these songs, I can finally sleep. Hm? J-hope, aren’t you done? The guys already left.
J-Hope: You can go ahead, I’ll leave later.
Suga: What, you’re still stuck in “Dionysus’’? Dude, stop already the song is great.
J-Hope: Hey listen, I really love this song and I’m feeling inspired so please let me stay.
Suga: Alright, but don’t forget PD Bang wants this done by the end of this week.
J-Hope: Alright, I’ll finish it as soon as I can.

Graduation

High school is finally over. Today marks that day. We threw our ''chains'' keeping us from attaining complete freedom when we threw our funny looking blue hats into the air. Everyone is smiling and laughing genuinely thinking of their future. I just smiled for the picture, not because I was sad to leave high school, but that I wasn't happy either. I understood the saying ''you'll miss high school once you leave it'' as soon as I heard it. After being put into this path that society built for you, I got accustomed to it, not having to worry about what to do next. It's making me anxious, my future is in my hands now. If we're supposed to feel free, why do I feel more suffocated than before? I won't get to enjoy life as it is as much anymore because I'll have to be constantly thinking about what to do next. It'll go on and on until I retire. I hate growing up, I hate it. I'm such a pessimist, I can't think of things in a positive light. However, I'm sure that the future will bring good things and I'll do my best o overcome any obstacle that'll come my way.

Namjoon's Story, 3 POVs

I want to write about someone who means a lot to me, I do not know this person personally but I have been presented to a big part of his life through social media. His name is Kim Namjoon, leader of South Korean group BTS. He has faced many hardships in his life, many that I know of and many that I’m unaware of. He was one of the smartest students in his country, with grades as good as his he could’ve have had any job, high paying jobs. However he decided to follow his dream by debuting as Rap Monster (now RM) from BTS in a small company called “BigHit Entertainment”. I will try to reenact the time where had to make the decision on whether or not to audition for BigHit.

Namjoon’s Story

His point of view:

Hi,

My name is Kim Namjoon and I’m a middle school student from Ilsan, South Korea. I have this dream of becoming a rapper, but my parents are against it. My mom even threw my mic away once...ã… ã…  They’re constantly bugging me on how I should focus on school and get good grades, but I do! I was ranked in the nation's top 1% as a student. Don’t get me wrong, my country is very small, I’m in no way the smartest guy on Earth. However, if I have decent grades, why is it so bad that I rap in my free time? Oh, I forgot to tell you that I’m part of an underground hip hop crew called Daenamhyup. My stage name is Runch Randa~ do you like it? I do haha.. I have recently been contacted by this idol agency, if I remember well they’re called ‘’BigHit Entertainment”, in all honesty I don’t know them so well. This seems like a big opportunity for me, but.. Becoming a K-pop idol?  I don’t know about that. I don’t wanna wear make-up and dance.. ã… ã…  but I do want my music to reach more people.. However success is not guaranteed, Bighit doesn’t seem like a big company, but they seem pretty nice. What about my parents? They’re so worried about me being financially stable in the future, I don’t think they would accept it.. Haa~~ why is this so hard? I wish I would stop overthinking..

My point of view (friend in school):

Dear Diary,

I saw Namjoon at school today, he told me some amazing news! He was invited to audition to Bighit Entertainment today by a staff member who went to one of his live performances and I'M SO EXCITED! ♡ WOW he can become an actual singer signed to an actual label :3 I'm so jealous of him. This guy is literally one of the smartest people in the country AND he is so good musically wise too! UGH how can a nerd be so hot.. ã… ã…  I told him to go for it, but he was like:
- I don’t wanna wear make-up and dance.
-Ah shut up you'd look better than me! I said.
I understand this is a big decision, it's his whole future. He is asked to make a choice in such a small amount of time.. even I would freak out! Right now its 10:40PM, I bet he can't even sleep. I'm so anxious to know his answer. He's a smart and hard-working guy, I know that in whatever he chooses he'll succeed!

Kim Namjoon a.k.a Runch Randa

Kim Namjoon, 15 years old, has been contacted by unknown company “Bighit Entertainment”. The nation’s top 1% student faces hard decision between richness and poverty and we have interviewed him to understand why even bother thinking about it.

A Helping Hand

The team of Discharged has invited middle schooler Kim Namjoon this morning to help him choose his path and create his life plan. Reality isin't a fairytale where every ending is happy. The sooner he realizes that, the better.
Interview
Discharged: Hello, welcome to our set Namjoon.

Namjoon: Hello, pleasure to meet you.

Discharged: Now, Namjoon will you please explain your situation to our readers?

Namjoon: I have recently been contacted by this idol company, I'm considering auditioning to them. I'm still scared that I might not succeed but am hypnotized by the idea of my music reaching a larger audience.

Discharged: Isn't that a risky move? Bighit is not a very big company, you have such good grades you could have any well-payed job you want!

Namjoon: I guess I could, but I'd be unhappy because I'm passionate about music. As long as I'm making music, I don't need fancy cars and rings to be happy.

Discharged: Why not become a doctor? You could save lives!

Namjoon: I believe that it is also possible to save lives through music. It heals and comforts. At least, it saved me.

Discharged: What about your hip-hop crew? Won't the members look down on you for leaving them? You understand K-pop idols are very criticized by underground rappers.

Namjoon: Hmm.. No, I believe in my friends. I don't think they'll turn their backs on me for doing something good for myself. I believe they want to see me win as much as I want to see them win. I am no K-pop idol either, I am only me.

Discharged: What is Bighit's plan for you then? And exactly did they contact you

Namjoon: I'm not sure, but I heard that when the company's CEO heard my rap he wanted to create a boy group with me in it, that what the guy who invited me to the audition said.

Discharged: Are you okay with that?

Namjoon: Of course! Why wouldn't I? I have always been in a group, this is nothing different.

Discharged: Bighit is not very known, they seem to really want you to sign with them and you're still underage. Do you not think this is weird?

Namjoon: What do you mean?

Discharged: Do you think they might have anything to do with the paedophilia community?

Namjoon: ... Really?.. That's the question?

Discharged: Haha no it's just a joke.

Namjoon:

Discharged:

Namjoon:

Discharged:

Namjoon: You know what? School starts soon so I have to leave right now! Sorry to cut this short.

Discharged: Oh sure! Thank you for coming.

Namjoon: Bye.

    Modern Times

Last week, I watched “Modern Times” by Charlie Chaplin with my cinema class and a particular scene stood out to me. Charlie was put in jail by mistake, but he was a good inmate and even helped the police when another inmate tried to trick them. As a reward, a police officer told Charlie to leave jail earlier but he did not want to. The reason being that Charlie had a better life in jail than he did in the outside world. He had a ceiling over his head, a toilet, bed and food, whereas outside he worked like crazy to the point where he had a nervous breakdown before resulting in being sent to the hospital and losing his job. Later in the movie a new character is introduced, a woman who is homeless and we follow her as she lives her life trying to provide for her littles sisters by stealing food. My point being that it is fascinating to me that, inmates, who were put in jail for commiting crimes and being corrupt members of society, have better life than those who are poor and many being born into poverty and having no choice but to live in that situation. Of course, life conditions in prison are not the best: The food is bad, the beds are not of great comfort, etc. However, they all have their basic needs fulfilled. They have food, they take showers, they have a bed to sleep in, etc. In the contrary, those in poverty have to fight to survive no matter how great their souls might be. This part of society makes no sense to me whatsoever. It is wrong to me for those in poverty to be looked down upon worse than inmates. Those in jail have supposedly lost their “freedom” when they put themselves in that situation, but looking at it from this perspective is freedom really worth dying of hunger or cold anymore?

Rule 3 - Make Friends with People Who Want the Best for You

The book ''12 Rules for Life: An Antidote for Chaos'' is filled with good advice that everyone can benefit from. Many of the things in it were not an epiphany for me since they are things that I had already thought of, but put into Peterson's words. However, it is useful to have these thoughts written down and put together in a book. The excerpt that I chose from chapter three carries one of the most important messages in the book. The author warns his readers of the people they surround themselves with. Not everyone that we meet wants the best for us. Driven by jealousy and insecurity, some will not want to see us doing as well as them or better than them. The same people will want to get the best out of us in order to better themselves while bringing us down at the same time. Peterson wants us to be careful of who to help: the ones who actually care for us and need our help to improve or the ones who don't? I have a few friends that give too much of themselves to people who do not deserve it and I think that this book would be of great help to them in multiple aspects. Personally, I do doubt many of my acquaintances and even some family members. I do feel like they only come to me when in need but I still shy away from cutting ties with these people because I do not want to hurt them, if they would even be hurt. I prefer to be the one to hurt instead of others, that is one of my worst traits. Not to be hypocritical, I also had a very selfish period in my life, but it is essential to accept and learn from the past to better oneself.
